Partner Spotlight – Maxwell Petersen

How long have you practiced law and what is your practice area?

I have been practicing law for over 35 years, primarily covering intellectual property and patent law with reference to the chemical and polymer industries and related mechanical engineering applications. I handle patent litigation, prosecution, opinions, and counselling.

Who is your typical client?

I represent various global clients in sectors including steel alloy manufacturing processes, coextruded polymer films (including innovative nanolayer films) and manufacturing, and clients involved in various industrial processes covering packaging for food and medical applications. This includes biodegradable and compostable film manufacturing, packaging for related processing equipment, absorbent articles, and medical and personal care garments. I also represent clients in the wastewater treatment & energy sectors, including conventional and nuclear energy.

Such companies with global footprints provide an exciting and diverse client base.

How would you describe the Intellectual Property practice area at FisherBroyles?

The Intellectual Property practice area at the Firm is strong with a deep-seated bench. This is equally true of FisherBroyles’ attorneys & partners focusing on the chemical industry.

How is it different from previous law firms you have worked at?

Flexibility & the opportunity to work from home is a clear difference. This is an element of FisherBroyles’ distributed model that I particularly appreciate.

The approach to compensation also sets the Firm apart. FisherBroyles’ transparent and guaranteed formula contrasts positively with more unpredictable models & committees often found at other firms.

Have you been able to grow/build your personal practice since joining the Firm? If so, how and has the Firm’s model enabled that?

Certainly – I have experienced growth in pre-existing clients since I joined the Firm, while new clients have also joined my practice.

The lower overhead costs enabled by FisherBroyles’ distributed model, coupled with the Firm’s transparent approach to compensation, have allowed more flexibility in how I approach new business – for instance investing in targeted marketing efforts.
